History of Eka Karya Bedugul Botanical Garden

Name of Eka Karya Botanical Garden is given by I Made Taman (Head of Nature Conservation Department of Indonesia). Word “Eka” means one or first, and “Karya” means creation. It is named Eka Karya because this botanical garden is the first botanical garden that purely created by Indonesian people. This garden is officially open on 15 July 1959 and announced by Prof. Ir. Kusnoto Setyodiwiryo (Head of Indonesian Botanical Garden). On that time, the garden area is only about 50 hectares. On 2001 -2008, the botanical garden developed its area into 157.5 hectares.

Plantation

In the beginning, Bedugul Botanical Garden is purposed for conservation of needled – leaved plantation only. Then this garden develops and keeps on adding their plantations collections. And now, there are several groups of plantation that exist in this site. They are:

  • Orchids family
  • Roses
  • Cactus
  • Fern plants
  • Carnivore plants
  • Alga family
  • Bamboo
  • Begonia
  • Plantation for traditional ritual in Bali
  • Medical plantation
  • Water plantation
  • Palma

Not only for collection, the management of this botanical garden also want to develop those plantation. And by the time, the purpose of this garden is not only for conservation. But it also developed as research, education, recreation, and tourist destination for the people.

Bedugul Botanical Garden Location

The garden is located in the middle of Bali Island. It is located in Candikuning Village, Baturiti District, Tabanan Regency. It is 55 km away from Denpasar or take about 1,5 hour drive with our Bali Tour Driver. From Singaraja, it is taking about 45 minutes drive or about 30 km away from North of Bali. Since it is situated on the top of ex-volcano Bedugul, the latitude is about 1,250 – 1,450 meters above the sea water level. The average temperature here is about 18 – 20 degrees of Celsius with humidity up to 70 – 90% on the air.
